The Power of Profiles and Making Your Own

You may not know it, but if you have ever switched between black and white or color in Lightroom, you have been using one of the most powerful and important features, the Profiles. Profiles are how Lightroom interprets your photographs at the most basic level. It is the “look and feel” of the image that you see before you start editing. It is the foundation on which all other edits are based. Every decision, editing choice, and final look of your image is impacted by the profile you select.

I like to think of a profile as a blueprint that tells Lightroom how to assemble the image. The profile can impact colors, tones, contrast, color grading, and so much more. Profiles can be used for simulating camera styles, films, black and white variations, color values, or creative interpretations. In this class, we will dive into using Profiles and explore how to use them and how they impact your images and editing options in Lightroom and Lightroom Classic. We will also learn how to make our own profiles using Photoshop and Camera RAW that you can use to help define and refine your own sense of style. By the time we are done with the class, you might find that you have a brand new way of seeing your images when you start your work in Lightroom.

DSLR Scanning and working with film scans in Lightroom

The rumors of film photography being dead have all turned out to be false. Film is alive and well. Many photographers have returned to shooting film, and many are trying it for the first time. Some photographers might also have many old negatives and slides that they wish they could work within the digital darkroom. Today it is easier than ever to get your film converted into digital files. One of the best ways is to use the gear you already have. You can use your existing digital camera as your scanner and then processing those images in Lightroom. 

In this class, we will look at the basics of using your DSLR/Mirrorless camera to scan in your film and then process it in Lightroom using Negative Lab Pro (NLP), a plugin for Lightroom that makes working with film more effortless than ever. The whole point of organizing your photos in the first place is being able to find the photo you need when you need it. In this presentation Tim Grey will show you the many ways you can locate your photos in Adobe Lightroom Classic. Along the way you'll discover that whatever details you can remember about a photo can probably be used to locate a particular photo. You'll get tips on finding the right folder or collection, searching by basic metadata such as keywords, locating photos on the map, and using detailed metadata searches to track down photos. You'll also learn how to save specific search criteria for easy access to settings you often use for filtering photos.
